GARBAGE KILLS US MAKE IT SWEET
The Instagram project: @garbage_kills_us_make_it_sweet ©️ started up in May 2015.
Background
In many ways we have stopped noticing the litter that we daily encounter. I got frustrated by seeing litter where ever I went. My thought was that if I started photographing litter as I found it on the street or in the nature I would increase people`s awareness of the problem. The use of filters to beautify the photos gives a whole new meaning to the original rubbish.
By making the rubbish shine I aim to draw attention to it. But it is still ugly, it is still litter. Therefore you won`t find the straight angles in my photos, they are overexposed with handwritten titles, they are printed on matte aluminium plates to give a raw expression. It`s beauty and imperfection rolled into one expression. It is trashart.
The titles
The idea behind the long title of the project, (shortened GKUMIS), is that we are litterally drowning in litter - we might as well make our death a pretty one.
I also twist my brain to give each photo a fitting title, often with a reference to what it originally is or what it looks like after my editing.
Dogmephoto
My "dogme" rules is that I don`t touch the litter before it has been photographed. I want to show how it is left in nature or on the grouund.. After the shot I get rid of it in a responsible way. For the photos and the editing I use my mobile camera with a few added filters.
Sustainability
Most of the photos are printed by Cewe Japan Photo, who have a lot of focus on sustainability.
Where to find me
I publish 1 photo on Instagram every day, wherever I go. So far I have picked up more than 1100 pieces of litter.
